Knee pain often starts somewhere other than the knee. Misalignment in the hips, pelvis, or low back can change how you walk and overload one knee. At Alter Chiropractic in Delray Beach, Dr. Ryan Alter, D.C. examines your whole lower body — not just the sore spot — to find the source.

Find out whether your knee pain is coming from the knee itself — or from the hip, pelvis, or low back above it.
Get a plan built around what your exam actually shows, with honest expectations about timeline.
If your knee needs an orthopedist instead, we’ll tell you plainly and refer you to the right specialist.
Your knees carry you through every step, stair, and errand. When one starts aching, it changes how you move through your whole day — and you want to know why it’s happening and what can actually be done about it.
The knee is a hinge caught between two more complicated joints — the hip above and the ankle below. When something above or below isn’t moving the way it should, the knee often pays the price. That’s why treating only the knee sometimes brings only temporary relief.
Get started on your path to optimal health today.
Knee pain can come from the joint itself — or from how the rest of your body loads that joint. In our Delray Beach office, these are the patterns we commonly see:
Your knee doesn’t decide how it moves. It follows the hip and pelvis. When the pelvis sits unevenly or one hip is restricted, the thigh bone can rotate slightly, changing the angle at which your kneecap tracks. Over months and years, that altered angle can irritate the joint. Many patients with nagging knee pain also have hip pain or tightness they’ve learned to ignore.
When you limp to protect a sore foot, hip, or back — even slightly, even without noticing — you change the load on your knees. A gait compensation that lasts a few days is usually harmless. One that lasts months can leave one knee doing work it wasn’t built for. This is common after old injuries that “healed” but left a movement habit behind.
Not all knee pain starts in the knee. Irritated nerves in the low back can send pain signals down the leg, sometimes felt at or near the knee. If your knee hurts but the joint itself checks out fine — or the pain travels, tingles, or changes location — the low back may be the real story. Sciatica and other leg pain patterns can behave this way.
Arthritis-related changes, past meniscus or ligament injuries, and simple overuse — a new running routine, a long stretch of yard work, pickleball three days in a row — commonly show up as knee pain. Even here, how your body distributes load matters: a well-aligned lower body spreads stress more evenly than a compensating one.
Poor posture doesn’t stop at the shoulders. Prolonged sitting shortens the hip flexors and weakens the hips, which changes standing and walking mechanics — and the knees feel it.
Let’s be direct about what chiropractic care can and can’t do. A chiropractic adjustment doesn’t regrow cartilage or repair a torn ligament. What it can do is address the mechanical problems that overload the knee in the first place — and for many patients, that makes a meaningful difference in how the knee feels and functions.
At Alter Chiropractic, care for knee pain typically focuses on:
Restoring alignment in the pelvis, hips, and low back. Dr. Alter uses the Gonstead technique, a precise, analysis-driven approach to identifying exactly which segments are misaligned or restricted — and adjusting only those. When the structures above the knee move correctly, the knee can track the way it was designed to.
Addressing nerve irritation from the spine. When knee-area pain is referred from the low back, treating the knee alone misses the point. For some patients with disc-related pressure in the low back, spinal decompression may be part of the care plan.
Supporting better movement patterns. Adjustments open the door; consistent care and better mechanics keep it open. Dr. Alter also works with active patients and weekend athletes through athlete-focused care to help the whole lower body share the load.
Every plan starts with a thorough examination — because “knee pain” is a symptom, not a diagnosis, and the right care depends on what’s actually driving it. Many patients notice improvement as their alignment and gait improve, though results vary from person to person, and Dr. Alter will tell you honestly if he believes your knee needs a different kind of doctor.
Chiropractic care is not the right first stop for every knee problem, and we’d rather tell you that plainly than waste your time. See an orthopedist or physician promptly — or go to urgent care — if you have:
If your examination points toward a structural injury or a condition that needs imaging, injections, or surgical evaluation, Dr. Alter will refer you to the appropriate specialist. Good care means knowing what belongs in our office — and what doesn’t.
Your first visit at our Delray Beach office starts with a conversation and a thorough exam — how the pain started, what makes it better or worse, and how your hips, pelvis, low back, knees, and gait are actually functioning. From there, Dr. Alter explains what he found in plain language and lays out a recommended plan, including honest expectations about timeline. You can read more on our new patients page.

Often, yes — especially when the pain stems from alignment problems, gait compensations, or referred pain from the low back or hips. Chiropractic care addresses those mechanical causes. If your knee needs orthopedic care instead, Dr. Alter will tell you and refer you appropriately.
Knee pain without an injury frequently traces back to how the joint is loaded. Uneven hips, a subtle limp, long hours of sitting, or nerve irritation from the low back can all produce knee pain even when the knee itself was never hurt.
Care focuses on what the examination reveals. For many patients that means the pelvis, hips, and low back, since those structures control how the knee moves and loads. Dr. Alter uses the Gonstead technique to identify and adjust only the specific areas that need it.
Clues include pain that travels or changes location, tingling or numbness, pain that shifts with sitting or bending, or a knee that hurts even though it looks and feels structurally normal. A thorough exam can help distinguish referred pain from a local knee problem.
Go straight to a physician or orthopedist for a traumatic injury with rapid swelling, a knee that locks or gives way, inability to bear weight, visible deformity, or swelling with redness, warmth, or fever. Those signs need medical evaluation first.
It depends on the cause, how long it’s been present, and how your body responds. After your examination, Dr. Alter will give you an honest recommendation and expected timeline — and reassess along the way rather than locking you into an open-ended plan.

This has been my first experience with chiropractic treatment and I could not have asked for a better provider. The staff are always friendly and helpful; they always have a smile on their face when you walk through the doors. The treatment is AMAZING! Dr. Alter explains the process in a way that is easily understood. He is like the spine whisperer!!! His expertise and knowledge of what he is doing is so spot on that after one treatment I felt more energized relieved of pain. I’m happy I found Alter Chiropractor and look forward to each visit.

Alter chiropractic is amazing, I hurt my back in the gym and was able to get an appointment right away and instantly started to feel better. Between Alexis and Haley up front and Dr. Alter, they have an all around great staff and I always look forward to seeing them each appointment!
I'm visiting from out of town and the pain has gotten consistently worse, I got a same day appointment with Dr. Alter, he is very knowledgeable and friendly. He was able to help me with part of my problem, but helped me to get a more permanent solution while visiting and when I get back home. Very clean office and friendly/helpful staff. I even told him if he could just relocate his office to where I live, that's how impressed I was with his service.
I can’t recommend Alter Chiropractic enough! I came in with a pinched nerve that started in my neck and radiated through my shoulder all the way down to my thumb. I was incredibly stiff, had very limited mobility, and was dealing with constant nerve pain. I’m only halfway through my treatment program, and the difference has been amazing. My mobility has improved significantly, the stiffness is gone, and the nerve pain continues to subside. I’m finally getting the relief I was hoping for. Dr. Alter has been outstanding throughout the entire process. He took the time to explain everything, made sure I was comfortable with each step of my treatment, and genuinely cares about his patients’ progress. The staff is welcoming, professional, and always makes each visit a positive experience. The equipment and treatment approach have been exactly what I needed to get back on track. If you’re dealing with neck pain, a pinched nerve, or similar issues, I highly recommend Alter Chiropractic. I’m grateful for the care I’ve received and look forward to continuing my recovery.

Doc Alter is the best! I have been going to chiropractic for over 20 years- his very simple techniques with minimal manipulation teach the body to heal itself at first had me skeptical - but it has me feeling better than I have in 10 years- don’t want to jinx it but my back hasn’t gone out since I started with him- and that is fantastic!
