Short answer: the cost of spinal decompression depends on how many visits your condition needs, which table you’re treated on and what else is part of your plan. Most insurance plans don’t pay for it, but HSA and FSA funds usually can. At Alter Chiropractic, Dr. Ryan Alter gives you the full cost after a free consultation, before any treatment starts.

“How much does it cost?” is one of the first questions people ask about spinal decompression, and it’s a fair one. Decompression is usually paid for out of pocket, so you deserve a clear answer before you commit. Here is what drives the price, how insurance, Medicare and HSA funds fit in, and how to compare offices without getting caught by surprises.

Why there’s no single price

Decompression is a course of care, not a one-time visit. Two people with the same MRI can need very different plans. These are the main things that change the cost.

How many visits you need

Decompression is usually done as a series of sessions over several weeks. A mild, recent problem may need fewer visits than a disc that has bothered you for years. At our office, a typical initial plan is about 24 sessions over 6 to 12 weeks. Your own number depends on your exam and how you respond.

Which table you’re treated on

We offer decompression on two systems. Our Triton tables treat both the neck and the low back. The DRX9000-SL, our most advanced system, treats both too. Dr. Alter recommends the one that fits your problem, and the plan you’re given reflects that choice. Read more in DRX9000 vs. other spinal decompression tables.

What else is in the plan

Most plans pair decompression with chiropractic adjustments and simple home exercises, because a spine that moves well tends to hold its improvement. Some plans also include laser therapy or intersegmental traction. Each piece is explained before it’s added.

Your exam and imaging

Every plan starts with a hands-on exam. Digital X-rays are taken in the office when they’re needed, and we’ll review any MRI you already have.

What’s included in a plan

When Dr. Alter recommends decompression, your plan spells out:

  • Which table you’ll be on and why
  • How many visits are planned, and how often
  • What else is part of each visit, like adjustments or exercises
  • When we’ll check your progress
  • The total cost, and the payment options available

Nothing is done until you understand the plan and say yes.

Does insurance cover spinal decompression?

Often, no. Many large insurers, including UnitedHealthcare, list motorized spinal decompression as unproven and don’t pay for it, even when they cover chiropractic adjustments. (We explain the research behind that in does spinal decompression work?)

Alter Chiropractic is out-of-network with all insurances. Depending on your plan, you may be able to submit for reimbursement for parts of your care, such as the exam or adjustments. Call your insurer and ask whether you have out-of-network chiropractic benefits and whether they cover “mechanical traction” or “spinal decompression.”

Can I use my HSA or FSA?

Usually, yes. The IRS counts chiropractic care as a qualified medical expense, so money in a Health Savings Account (HSA), Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) can generally be used. We accept HSA, HRA and Flex cards. If you’re unsure about your account’s rules, check with your plan administrator.

Does Medicare cover spinal decompression?

Medicare’s chiropractic benefit is narrow. It covers manual adjustments of the spine to correct a misalignment, and not much else from a chiropractor. Decompression generally isn’t included, even with a Medicare supplement. After your free consultation, we explain exactly what Medicare covers and what it doesn’t, before any treatment or charges.

Payment options

  • Payment plans. We offer affordable care plans, including payment plans, so you don’t have to pay for a full course at once.
  • HSA, HRA and FSA cards. Accepted for eligible care.
  • No surprises. Every cost is explained before your first treatment.

How to compare prices between offices

A low price per visit doesn’t tell you much on its own. When you compare offices, ask:

  1. How many visits are in the plan, and what is the total?
  2. Is the exam included, and are X-rays extra?
  3. Which table will I be on?
  4. Are adjustments, exercises or other therapies included?
  5. What happens, and what does it cost, if I need more visits?
  6. Will a doctor check my progress along the way?

Also be wary of very large up-front packages with no clear explanation of why you need that many visits, and of any office that promises a success rate.

Weighing the cost

It’s worth comparing the cost of decompression with the cost of the alternatives: missed work, rounds of medication, injections that only quiet symptoms for a while, or surgery and its recovery time. For a side-by-side look at the bigger alternative, read spinal decompression vs. back surgery.
